Open Question: Employment references. Can you just give details of your last place of work without consent?

I’m in my early 20s and my last job was in 2009 when I was made redundant. I was just 18 and in college at the time. Now I’m in University, I support myself through free-lance work and using my student finance. I’ve also done some temping. This has worked quite well up to now, but I’ve always had a home to go back to when I’ve been in trouble. I no longer have that luxury.
The place I used to work is under new management, The temp jobs don’t seem like a particularly accurate portrayal of me and I wouldn’t know who to talk to. I don’t know where to go for two references from employers. Usually do they not just ask if you worked there anyway? Can’t I just give the details of the place of work?
