My fiancee and I are considering looking into other places to live. I am going to be finishing my master’s in education (I’d like to teach high school) and he is a mechanic. Essentially, we can both take our vocations pretty much anywhere. I realize that I may have to go through some coursework or testing to be able to teach elsewhere but I am willing to do that.

We currently live in Orange County, Southern California. Some people may say “Don’t leave! Who would NOT want to live there?” I have to admit, there are quite a few perks: Disneyland is close, the beach is close, the mountains are close, the weather is pretty nice. However, the cost of living is pretty high, and neither of us are really going into highly lucrative careers. We have no delusions of ever being overly wealthy, but we would like to have the possibility of owning a home and raising a family. With real estate and cost of living being what it is, here, the likelihood seems slim.

We would like to begin to visit places that we may like to move to, but right now we are having problems even figuring out where to begin. I was hoping the Yahoo community could give me a jumping off point :)
Aside from a more reasonable cost of living, we are also looking for somewhere that has suburban areas, but where rural areas aren’t hours of driving away (like they are here). We both really like to hike and camp. Neither of us has ever lived where it snows, so we are not entirely eager to move somewhere like Wisconsin that sees heavy snow, but mild snow (or shorter snowy seasons) are OK. I really like trees. :) For a super bonus, a relatively large city that could offer Broadway-style shows and museums being within a manageable commuting distance (1-2 hours) would be great so that we could still have the options of enjoying those luxuries on occasion would be great.

We are not opposed too moving out of country, necessarily, but my fiancee only speaks English, and I speak English and moderate German (random, I know).
