My little girl Eve is one of three rats living in the All Living Things Luxury Rat Home ( http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4470997 .) I was a little worried at first about using a cage with a plastic tub as the bottom because I do have experience with one of my old rats (who was a larger size) completely chewing through the corner of a plastic cage I used to have. She ended up totally demolishing that cage corner within weeks. I don’t have anymore the Rat Manor cage I replaced that one with, otherwise I would be using that instead of buying the luxury rat home. The nearest Petco to me is at least two hours away by buses and trains, and Petsmart, which is where I go for all my pet stuff now, only sells plastic-bottom cages (short of the Ferret Nation cages and I don’t have anywhere near enough money for one.)

Eve is not that large, nor are her cagemates. One of her cagemates who is similar in size weighed 167g when I took her to the vet in December. Things have been absolutely fine up until now, and all of a sudden, chompity chompity!!!

I know rats - once a rattie has it in her mind that chewing is fun, she will gleefully go right to the same corner of the cage and chew away, no matter what I do or how much I yell or cry or squeak at her. I don’t have the funds right now for a brand new cage. What can I do in the meantime before I can afford a new cage, to try and deter her? Does Bitter Apple work for rats? And what would you guys suggest for a metal-bottom rat cage? I can craft covers for the bottom of a cage with wires.
