My sister-in-law is getting married soon. She choose to get married within 3 months of her engagement. She wants her brother (my husband), my two sons, and myself in the wedding party. We live almost 24 hours away. We have one chance of vacation leave this year and it will be spent on her wedding. It takes us two days to drive each way. The day we get there, I and the rest of my family have to be fitted for dresses and tuxes to make sure everything fits correctly. I am not comfortable with the dress chosen as I am a larger lady and the style is not flattering at all for my body type. She has 6 other bridesmaids, all young 20 somethings. The next morning is the bridal luncheon which lasts nearly all day until the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner. I know it is an honor to be in her wedding, and I love her dearly, but this is a little much. It is putting a toll on my husband and I and I have been totally stressed about everything. So, to sum everything up, we would be giving up our only leave, cost, and stress to see her 1 hour ceremony and attend a reception just to get up to leave the next morning, which happens to be on Mother’s Day. We would spend more time driving than in our home town. Please help. Her mother has already ordered my dress. I do not mind covering the cost of said dress.
Mrs. B, My husband hasn’t really stated too much. He feels it is an awful long way to go just to be there for a little while. Our children our very young and it is a hard trip. We have already made it twice this year and we are moving in November, so time and money are very valuable to us right now.
Also, our marriage is not in trouble. We are just stressed out about everything.
I was sent to the dress shop to try on a pretty and nice modest dress. I told her it looked lovely. I explicitly was asked which type of dress do I prefer and I said anything but strapless. Well, that was what was chosen.
And we had already made plans for vacation before this came up.
