Voting Question: How do I buy my first car?

I have just recently moved out of my mom’s house for the first time and into an apartment with my brother. We don’t have a car but we are borrowing our mom’s, and we both share it as needed. My current job is within walking distance (5 mins), so I walk to work and my brother drives to his work.

I am starting a new job next month that is quite a distance from home, so we need to buy a car so we can each have a way to get to our jobs, but we have never bought a car before and I don’t know what I need in a car, what to look for in a car, how much to pay for a car, how or where to buy a car, etc.

We are total newbs. Can anyone help?

Additional details:
We want an affordable car that looks nice and has basic luxuries like power windows, power locking, A/C, etc.
We want to pay for the car 100% up front. We do not want to finance the car or take out a loan because we don’t want to pay any interest.
We do not want an old car. We are probably looking to buy a model 2004 or later… but not sure.
